Frequently Asked Questions About
Quit Smart Leader Certification

Q.
What is Quit Smart?

A.
Quit Smart is available in a self-help stop smoking kit and, in many communities, as a three-session quit smoking class that utilizes the kit plus personalized instruction. Quit Smart combines several powerful treatment elements — including hypnosis, medication recommendations and a patented cigarette substitute that simulates a cigarette — to produce a potent stop-smoking treatment.

Q.
Who developed the Quit Smart program?

A.
Robert H. Shipley, Ph.D., who has been director of the Duke University Medical Center Stop Smoking Program since 1977. Dr. Shipley has published over 70 scientific articles and 12 books and book chapters.

Q.
There are so many programs out there to help people stop smoking. What makes Quit Smart different?

A.
Quit Smart costs less and takes less time than other stop smoking programs. More smokers enroll in Quit Smart because it includes the help that they want, such as hypnosis, a cigarette substitute and medication recommendations. With most programs, about a quarter of the smokers manage to quit after six months or a year. In three separate published studies, Quit Smart has produced quit rates of up to 66 percent. A study done at five U.S. Air Force bases found that Quit Smart was over three times more effective than four other stop-smoking programs (Shipley, et al., Federal Practitioner, 2002, vol. 19(3), p. 13-22).

Q.
What quit smoking aids does Quit Smart offer?

A.
Each tobacco user you treat receives a Quit Smart Stop Smoking Kit. It consists of the Quit Smart Guidebook, a hypnosis CD or cassette tape and a Better Quit Cigarette Substitute. The Kit is available in English and in Spanish.

Q.
What is the Better Quit ® Cigarette Substitute?

A.
This patented device simulates the look and feel of a real cigarette. Users can adjust the air flow to match the draw of their favorite cigarette. A carrying tube keeps the Better Quit simulated cigarette clean and handy. Better Quit gives a new ex-smoker something to do with hands and lips, stimulates relaxing breaths, and provides some of the satisfaction of smoking. A smoker finds holding and puffing on a cigarette pleasurable because it has been associated with thousands of pleasurable "hits" of nicotine to the brain. Since Better Quit has no nicotine, its use gradually lessens the pleasure associated with the look and feel of a cigarette.

Q.
What are my options to become a certified Quit Smart Leader, and what does it cost?

A.
Tuition is $295 for a one-day Leader Certification Seminar or a home-study certification course. Each of these options include a sample QuitSmart Stop Smoking Kit and a Quit Smart Leader Manual. Seminar tuition only, for those who don't need the Leader Manual and sample Kit, is $220. The home-study course involves viewing 5 hours of video (DVD or VHS; on loan) of a live Leader-Certification Seminar. If you have several people to be trained, another option is to sponsor an onsite seminar at your facility.

Q.
What does the Quit Smart Kit cost?

A.
A Quit Smart Stop Smoking Kit costs $31.99. When you order 20 kits or more, the price per kit drops to $23.99 or less. There are no franchise fees.

Q.
How do these costs compare with those of other programs?

A.
Commercial programs charge at least $45 per client kit. The American Lung Association charges $25 per kit.

Q.
Quit Smart is priced right, but will I be getting an inferior program?

A.
Quite the contrary. In anonymous seminar evaluations, participants have consistently judged both the training and the Leader Manual to be "excellent." The Quit Smart Stop Smoking Kit for the smoker has also received enthusiatic reviews.

Q.
I'm not good at promoting things. What help can I expect?

A.
The Quit Smart Leader Manual includes an extensive chapter on promoting the Quit Smart Stop Smoking program in the community and at worksites. Ready-to-use promotional materials include press releases, newspaper advertisements and sample letters to Quit Smart prospects, graduates and professional referral sources. You may also choose to have your contact information listed at Quitsmart.com and receive a quitsmart.com email address.

Q.
Are other promotional aids available?

A.
Yes, tri-fold customer-recruitment brochures and brochure holders. You may easily customize these four-color brochures to meet your needs. Other promotional items include Quit Smart lapel pins and posters.

Q.
What is included in the Quit Smart Leader Manual?

A.
The 2008 Quit Smart Leader Manual reviews research findings and tells you how to present each aspect of the Quit Smart Stop Smoking program. Chapters include Introduction, Psychiatric Comorbidity, Nicotine Fading, Medications, Withdrawal Symptoms, Weight Gain, Stress Management, Hypnosis, Relapse Prevention, Lifestyle Balance, Social Support, Treatment Protocols, Hospitalized Smokers, Promotion, Worksites, and References.

Q.
Is use of the Quit Smart name restricted?

A.

Yes. Use of the registered trademark "Quit Smart" and logo in program identification and promotion is restricted to non-smokers who are health professionals or health educators who have:

  • attended an official Quit Smart Leader-Certification Seminar
  • agreed to use the Quit Smart client materials
  • agreed to use the Quit Smart treatment protocols

Q.
What do you mean Quit Smart protocols? Is there more than one Quit Smart program?

A.
Yes. Various program options allow you to match the Quit Smart program to the needs of your setting. Also, Quit Smart can be taught to a single tobacco user or to a group of tobacco users.

Q.
Why will a prospective "quitter" enroll in my Quit Smart program?

A.
Quit Smart gives smokers what they want, including a brand-switching method to gradually wean off nicotine, coping skills training, recommendations for medication(s) to ease withdrawal discomfort and a hypnosis CD or cassette to increase confidence, relaxation and comfort.

Q.
I'm not sure I'm qualified to teach hypnosis.

A.
We do not expect you to do individualized clinical hypnosis. In the Quit Smart procedure, hypnosis is taught via an CD or cassette. You will learn enough about hypnosis to introduce the hypnosis CD and to answer questions.

Q.
How much time does it take to teach the Quit Smart method to a smoker or to a group of smokers?

A.
Individual counseling takes three or four 40-minute sessions, with sessions devoted to Preparation, Quitting, and Maintenance. The group class can be taught in three or four 70- to 90-minute sessions. Your options are presented in the certification seminar and in the Leader Manual.

Q.
Will Dr. Shipley be teaching the Certification Seminar himself?

A.
Yes, and after the seminar he remains available for free phone and email consultations.

Q.
What if the Certification Seminar fails to meet my expectations?

A.
You get your tuition back. The Quit Smart Leader Certification Seminar is unconditionally guaranteed.

Q.
How do I register for a seminar and get hotel reservations?

A.
You may enroll online or send your name, address and daytime phone number with a check, purchase order or credit card information to Quit Smart, P.O. Box 99016, Duke Station, Durham NC 27708-9016. For hotel reservations, phone the hotel and ask for the special Quit Smart rate.
