Quit Smart
Everything Your Clients
Need to Quit Smoking
How to Become a
Certified
Quit Smart Stop-Smoking Leader
Quit
Smart Leader-Certification Seminars are offered at various locations
throughout the United States. There is also a Home-Study option
for those who can not make it to a seminar (involves watching
5 hours of DVD or VHS video of a live seminar and reviewing the
Leader Manual). The seminars are presented by Dr. Robert Shipley,
director of the Duke University Medical Center's Stop Smoking
Clinic, who has trained more than 2000 health professionals as
Certified Quit Smart leaders.
The day-long (usually 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM) seminar includes lectures,
slides, discussion, audio and video demonstrations, to show you
how to implement and promote your own Quit
Smart Stop Smoking Treatment System. You will learn
how to treat individual smokers and conduct classes for up to
20 people. Stop smoking classes may be conducted for members
of the community or on-the-job or for other organizations. During the certification
seminar, you will learn how to:
- Assess nicotine addiction
- Teach stop smoking coping skills
- Help ex-smokers foster a non-smoking
self-image
- Oversee a nicotine-weaning program
- Know when and how to recommend various
quit smoking medications
- Introduce a safe and effective form
of hypnosis (using a CD)
- Use a simple letter to increase social
support for new ex-smokers
- Teach relapse prevention and recovery
strategies
- Promote your Quit Smart stop smoking
program

To assist certified facilitators, Robert H.
Shipley has written the Quit Smart Leader Manual: Scientific
Foundations and Implementation Guidelines (2008), which is
available to certified facilitators for $75. It contains 16 chapters
that discuss nicotine fading, nicotine replacement medications,
other medications such as Chantix and Zyban, hypnosis, withdrawal
symptoms, stress management, social support, relapse prevention,
and other topics. The text is supported by hundreds of references.
The manual also includes promotional information
with sample ads, letters, flyers, and press releases to use in
promoting your Quit Smart program. Certified facilitators also
