Quit Smart Stop-Smoking Leader
Quit
Smart Leader-Certification Seminars are offered at various locations
throughout the United States. There is also a Home-Study option
for those who can not make it to a seminar (involves watching
5 hours of DVDs of a live seminar and reviewing the Leader Manual).
The seminars are presented by Dr. Robert Shipley, director of
the Duke Stop Smoking Clinic, who has trained more than 2000
health professionals as Certified Quit Smart leaders.

The day-long (usually 8:30 AM to 4:30
PM) seminar includes lectures, slides, discussion, audio and
video demonstrations, to show you how to implement and promote
your own Quit Smart Stop Smoking
Treatment System.
You will learn how to treat individual
smokers and conduct classes for up to 20 people. Stop smoking
classes may be conducted for members of the community or on-the-job
or for other organizations. During the certification seminar, you will learn
how to:
- Assess nicotine addiction
- Teach stop smoking coping skills
- Help ex-smokers foster a non-smoking
self-image
- Oversee a nicotine-weaning program
- Know when and how to recommend various
quit smoking medications
- Introduce a safe and effective form
of hypnosis (using a CD)
- Use a simple letter to increase social
support for new ex-smokers
- Teach relapse prevention and recovery
strategies
- Promote your Quit Smart stop smoking
program

Shipley has written the Quit Smart Leader Manual: Scientific
Foundations and Implementation Guidelines (2009), It contains
16 chapters that discuss nicotine fading, nicotine replacement

prevention, and other topics. The text is supported by hundreds
of references. The manual also includes
